SBI (State Bank Of India)

• State Bank of India (SBI), with a 200 year history, is the largest commercial bank in India in terms of assets, deposits, profits, branches, customers and employees.
• The Government of India is the single largest shareholder of this Fortune 500 entity with 61.58% ownership.
• SBI is ranked 60th in the list of Top 1000 Banks in the world by "The Banker" in July 2012.

The origins of State Bank of India

• 1806 when the Bank of Calcutta (later called the Bank of Bengal) was established
• 1840 when the Bank of Mumbai was established
• 1843 when the Bank of Madras was established
• In 1921, the Bank of Bengal and two other banks (Bank of Bombay and Bank of Madras) were amalgamated to form the Imperial Bank of India.
• In 1955, the Reserve Bank of India acquired the controlling interests of the Imperial Bank of India and SBI was created by an act of Parliament to succeed the Imperial Bank of India.
•  On 13 August 2008 when State Bank Of Saurastra merged with SBI.
• Then on 19 June 2009 the SBI board approved the absorption of State Bank Of Indore.

In present, SBI group consists of SBI and five associate banks.

• State Bank of Patiala 
• State Bank of Travancore

• The group has an extensive network, with over 20,000 plus branches in India and another 190 foreign offices spread over 36 countries across the world. As of 31st March 2014, the group had assets worth USD 400 billion, deposits of USD 307 billion and capital & reserves in excess of USD 24.60 billion.

Institute of Banking Personnel Selection popularly known as IBPS, is an organization which provides services to its clients in the area of personnel selection, recruitment and assessment etc.
Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) is an autonomous agency in India, which started its operation in 1975 as Personnel Selection Services (PSS).

 In 1984, IBPS became an independent entity at the behest of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Public Sector Banks.

1.      Banks provide funds for business as well as personal needs    of individuals. They play

         Central bank

• RBI is the central bank of India.
• A bank which is entrusted with the functions of guiding and regulating the banking system of a country is known as its Central bank.

Commercial Banks

 Commercial Banks are banking institutions that accept deposits and grant short-term loans and advances to their    customers.

Types of Commercial banks

Commercial banks are of three types i.e., Public sector banks, Private sector banks and foreign banks.

• Public Sector Banks

These are banks where majority stake is held by the Government of India or Reserve Bank of India. Examples of public sector banks are: State Bank of India, Corporation Bank, Bank of Baroda and Dena Bank, etc.

• Private Sectors Banks

In case of private sector banks majority of share capital of the bank is held by private individuals. These banks are registered as companies with limited liability. For example: The ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Federal Bank etc.

• Foreign Banks

These banks are registered and have their headquarters in a foreign country but operate their branches in our country. Some of the foreign banks operating in our country are Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC), Citibank, American Express Bank, Standard & Chartered Bank,etc.

Development Banks

Business often requires medium and long-term capital for purchase of machinery and equipment, for using latest technology, or for expansion and modernization. Such financial assistance is provided by Development Banks.

There are three types of co-operative banks operating in our country :

Function of commercial banks

 The functions of commercial banks are of two types.
(A) Primary functions; and
(B) Secondary functions.

Primary functions

1. Accepting deposits.
2. Granting loans and advances.

Accepting deposits

The most important activity of a commercial bank is to mobilize deposits from the public. People who have surplus income and savings find it convenient to deposit the amounts with banks.

Grant of loans and advances

The second important function of a commercial bank is to grant loans and advances.

Loans

A loan is granted for a specific time period. Generally commercial banks provide short-term loans.  But term loans, i.e., loans for more than a year may also be granted.
Advances

An advance is a credit facility provided by the bank to its customers. It differs from loan in the sense that loans may be granted for longer period, but advances are normally granted for a short period of time.

1. If both the lengths (%) and breadth(%) of a rectangle are changed find the change in area(%) ?
2. If the speed and time of a vehicle are changed, find the change in distance ?
Similarly in all those questions where two quantities are multiplied to produce third one
rate * time = cost
efficiency * time = work
average * no. of elements = total value
rate * quantity = price (expenditure)

1. According to Finance Ministry's Mid-Year economic review India's GDP is expected to rise to 5.5 percent in the current fiscal from 4.7 percent last year on back of improving macro-economic situation.

4. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has agreed to release another $1.05 billion financial assistance to Pakistan as part of its effort to help the country overcome economic crisis. With this, the total disbursements under the arrangement is about $3.2 billion, a statement said after the IMF executive board completed the fourth and fifth reviews of Pakistan's economic performance under a three-year programme supported by an Extended Fund Facility (EFF).

5. Amitabh Mattoo, one of India's leading thinkers, has been honoured in Australia for his significant contribution towards deepening and strengthening bilateral ties. Mattoo, 52, the inaugural director of Australia India Institute, was honoured by Victoria's Governor Alex Chernov during a function attended by India's High Commissioner in Australia Biren Nanda, Consul General in Melbourne Manika Jain and former Australian High Commissioner Peter Varghese.

In a historic decision, President Barack Obama announced a series of steps aimed at normalising relations with communist-ruled Cuba with which the US had severed diplomatic ties decades ago imposing a series of sanctions on its island neighbour. The steps being taken include instructions to re-establish the US Embassy in Cuban capital Havana, relaxing of trade and travel restrictions and review of Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism.

8. An Indian-origin man has been inducted in an Australian national body that advices the government on multicultural affairs and policy programmes. Vasan Srinivasan has been included in the six-member Australian Multicultural Council (AMC). The announcement of his induction was made by Social Services minister Kevin Andrews and Parliamentary Secretary Concetta Fierravanti-Wells.
